Interview with The Hulk
Samuel Lim is well-known in gym circles; his massive physique and superhuman gym lifts have earned him the moniker “The Hulk”. Since he placed third last year at the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge 2008, The Hulk’s presence has been even more domineering in the local strength sports scene. It is no surprise then, that he is the hot favourite to win this year’s Strongman 2009.
Q: Hulk, you placed third last year and by all signs and accounts you don't seem too happy with that. Why?
A: The Hulk has always been the strongest there is.
From Primary 4 to Secondary 4, I set all the records for shot put and discus in ACS (Barker Road). Slight hiccup with 3rd, not used to not winning.
Q: How did the injury happen?
A: I sprained my quadricep while flipping the tyre during the Strongman qualifiers, three weeks before the Finals.
Q: But it wasn’t all bad. You went on to form Team Iron Behemoths and have since gotten many sponsors.
A: Yeah, I guess it’s funny how God works. If I had placed first, all this would never have happened. We wouldn’t have such a active, vibrant and passionate community of strength-training enthusiasts – we wouldn’t have reached out to as many people.
Q: Now you seem to be the hot favourite to win this year’s Strongman Challenge. What do you say to that? Who are your close rivals? A: I hope people put money on that. I’m not worried about anyone.
Q: Tell us a little more about your training schedule for thisyear’s Strongman.
A: I train Strongman-specific implements 3 times a week with Team Iron Behemoths at Hong Lim Park.Wedo Powerlifting (Bench, Squats and Deadlifts) there too. Plus, I go for massages twice a week. This helps with recovery from all that intense training.
Q: Tell us about your nutritional plan (diet, supplements etc).
A: I eat six meals a day, consuming up to a kilo of rib-eye steak a day. Supplement-wise, I only consume the best supplements, courtesy of my sponsor NutriFirst. I’m on the full-stack: whey protein, casein protein, mass gainers, glutamine, BCAAs, Vitamins, fish oil, glucosamine. You have to be on everything if you’re natural, otherwise recovery would be a bitch.
Q: Any tips for pp looking to get into strongman?
A: Join Team Iron Behemoths! We have the best equipment in Singapore, plus the expertise. Visit us at teamironbehemoths@blogspot.com
Q: Any parting words for your rivals?
A: Train Harder or take up sewing.
